1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra - Matching #'s 428 Ram Air Automatic A/C Documented!

Comprehensively restored in early 2000's, this Meadowlark Yellow 1969 Ford Cobra Fastback is a prime example of Ford's first entry into the late 1960s budget supercar market. Shipped new to Lee Jarmon Ford, Inc. in Carrollton, Texas, the Cobra is equipped with a matching-numbers R-Code 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine that draws cooler outside air from the hood scoop through a vacuum-actuated Ram Air assembly on top of the air cleaner. Although Cobras were billed as no-frills muscle, this Cobra is optioned with black vinyl bucket seats, an AM radio, center console, power steering, power front disc brakes and air conditioning. The Cobra was Ford's answer to the highly successful Plymouth Road Runner of 1968.

When Pontiac created a new genre of American performance car with the GTO in 1964, other manufacturers soon followed with their own big-engine intermediates, including the Chevelle SS396, Oldsmobile 442, Plymouth GTX and the Dodge R/T. Initially, Ford stuck with its Fairlane GT model with the optional 390, but after debuting a 428 Cobra Jet big-block, Ford developed a new image model for the midsize Fairlane.

Starting with the Fairlane 500, the Cobra was designed as a budget supercar with the R code 428/335 HP Cobra Jet V-8 engine, C-6 automatic transmission, 9-inch rear end, dual exhaust ending with chrome tips and Competition Suspension with higher-rate springs, stiffer shocks and a larger front sway bar. Externally, Cobras were identified by a blackout grille, hood scoop with “428 Cobra Jet” chrome lettering on each side, racing-style hood pins and small Cobra emblems on the front fender and rear panel. Documented by original build sheet, retail order and a Deluxe Marti Report, this 1969 Ford Cobra Fastback looks the part of budget muscle car when wearing its dog-dish hubcaps.
