1967 Plymouth GTX - Original 440 V8 Documented Magazine Car!

Launched in 1967, the Plymouth Belvedere GTX quickly gained a reputation for being the “gentleman's” muscle car. It was stylish and yet potent, offering an alternative to the decidedly Spartan muscle cars in that era. According to Chrysler Historical figures show 8791 cars produced with the 440/TorqueFlite automatic trans combination - like this 31 year ownership feature car. Suffice to say that the '67 GTX was fast, yet at the same time smooth and very stylish. And with its coming, Plymouth had definitely arrived on the muscecar scene.

For the GTX, though, the stylist reserved a few special touches. First was that pair of air scoops on the hood, which, unfortunately, were not functional early on. The rest of the car was marked by a minimum of brightwork, and on this count the stylist struck a nice balance that made the car look tough but not overdone. But probably the thing that caused the most comments at the gas station was the huge "Pit Stop" pop-open gas filler cap located on the left rear quarter, which looked just like it could have come off Richard Petty's NASCAR stocker. Completing the look were large chrome-tipped dual exhausts and standard Red Streak tires, along with optional chrome Magnum 500 road wheels and dual sport stripes that most of the cars seemed to end up with. The GTX made a crystal clear statement that it wasn't the car Grandpa would use to pick up the neighborhood ladies and take them to the bingo game.

This GTX was found in Tennessee in 1988 by it's owner. The bodyshell had been cosmetically restored, but the car was otherwise totally disassembled. So first the 74,000-mile GTX was treated to a full mechanical restoration back to dead-original specifications.

Outside, almost every bit of trim and even the glass on the car were replaced with New-Old-Stock pieces, while new upholstery and carpet brought the interior back to original condition. The car has few factory options other than power steering, power drum brakes and a dealer-installed AM/FM radio. But let's not forget those optional wheels and stripes that contribute so much to the car's lean and mean character.

Per the Chrysler Historical documents this GTX came equipped with the Super Commando 440 - 8 Cyl. 4 bbl engine, Torqueflight automatic transmission, 3.23 Sure Grip rear axle, power steering, power brakes, AM Radio ( Dealer Installed AM/FM ), Center Console, Factory Tachometer, heavy duty suspension, deluxe steering wheel, tinted windshield, electric clock, magnum 500 road wheels, 14 inch redline tires, and finished in Bright Red exterior with black bucket seat interior.

The current owner has cherished this beautiful GTX for the past 31 years and is ready to pass it along to the next care taker. During this long time ownership the car has not only been meticulously maintained, but has been featured in High Performance Mopar magazine and Muscle Car Greats by Peter Sessler. It's an excellent car to add to any collection and will make a solid investment for future owners.
