1970 Dodge Challenger - 340 V8 Automatic Comprehensive Restoration Build Sheet!

During the pony-car wars, largely launched by Plymouth Barracuda and Ford Mustang in 1964, Dodge remained somewhat silent. They had the Dart, which kind of fit into the mold and definition of a pony car, but wasn't really accepted as such. With Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and Mercury Cougar joining the lineup, Dodge couldn't remain silent any longer and introduced the Challenger in the fall of 1969 as a 1970 model. Featuring a longer wheelbase than the Plymouth Barracuda it also held the line that Dodge was an upscale alternative to Ford, Plymouth and Chevrolet with a more posh interior, more standard features offsetting an extensive list of optional extras, a gaggle of color and trim packages and pretty much any engine from the Mopar toy box. Challenger set many records and, like so many Chrysler products, developed a loyal following that has grown exponentially over the years.

Under the hood here is an upgraded 340 CI 4-barrel V-8 rated at 275 HP, a popular engine for 1970 buyers that features a round twin-opening air cleaner with 340 pie-pan displacement callout and special 340 exhaust manifolds. Attention to detail is displayed throughout the engine bay. An A727 automatic transmission topped with the new ball-knob SlapStik shifter is behind this, and this car has power steering.

Ordering Top Banana paint was an added cost, and with the longitudinal black bumblebee stripe, white soft top and white interior, it was certainly one from the hive in the Scat Pack. Inside are high-back bucket seats, a center console, power convertible top controls, a Chrysler Solid State pushbutton radio, wood-grain trim on the console and three-spoke steering wheel, and a driver's remote mirror. The exterior is optioned with dual body-color sport mirrors (pass. not installed), Challenger identification emblem grille and a flip-up metal gas cap. This car rides on 14-inch Magnum wheels and a set of BFG radial tires. Gorgeously optioned, the car is documented by a build sheet and an owner's manual. For those seeking a convertible with manners and a non-stop color combination, think High Impact, think Dodge Material and think quality; this 1970 Dodge Challenger Convertible is sure to hit all three.
